School Aims
Cardinham School aims to provide the best education in a happy, caring environment, so all pupils develop to their maximum potential, giving them a sound preparation for life. Back to top
History
Cardinham is a small historic village on the southern slopes of Bodmin Moor, about four miles from Bodmin. The area is mainly
agricultural, with a large Forestry
Commission woodland nearby. There are many signs of the village's importance as a Celtic settlement.

Cardinham School admits girls and boys from four to eleven years old. Our pupils come from a variety of moorland villages and hamlets within its designated catchment area, as well as from the town of Bodmin
itself and other neighbouring villages.

The school celebrated its centenary in 1982 and the original Victorian building still forms the main part of the school. We use the nearby parish hall for PE, dance and drama. The school has its own playing field a short distance from the main site, with good sports facilities.

Our school is linked to Nanstallon, St Wenn and Lanivet Primary Schools under the County's Small Schools Cluster Scheme. The LEA gives an additional grant to each cluster of small schools, allowing for the sharing and purchase of resources which may normally be beyond the means of an individual school.

Parents are welcome to visit the school at any time - we value our close relationship and believe that it is in the benefit of the
children for us to work together. Many
parents help on a regular basis in the
classroom.

If you are looking for a school for your child, please come to visit us and meet the staff and children. Back to top
School organisation
Cardinham School is arranged in three classes of mixed age and ability.
There are three full time teachers, including the head teacher; a part-time teacher,
classroom assistants and a nursery assistant.
Each child will be working at a level which best suits his or her abilities. Pupils are encouraged to put maximum effort into their work and to take pride in what they do.
We aim to ensure that the work matches the pupil's ability and that planned progression takes place throughout a pupil's time at school.
Pupils are continually assessed by their
teachers and their level of attainment is taken into account when planning future work. Back to top
School times
The school day is from 9.00am - 12.00 noon and 1.00pm - 3.15pm.

Morning break is between 10.45am and 11.00am.
KS1 pupils have an afternoon break.

We are unable to accept responsibility for children at school before 8.45am or after 3.30pm, unless they are staying for extra-curricular activities. Back to top
School uniform
School uniform is not compulsory, but is recommended and worn by most of the children.
Emerald green school sweatshirts, embroidered with the school's name, are available from school office. We recommend that they are worn with white shirts / blouses and grey or black trousers / skirts (or green and white dresses in the summer). We also have available from school black fleeces embroidered with the schools name in emerald.
It is helpful if all clothes are clearly named.
A PE kit consisting of a pair of shorts, a tee shirt and plimsolls, contained in a named bag should be kept at school during the week. In addition trainers may be needed for activities on the school field and a warm top for PE in the winter.
Jewellery should not be worn to school.
To minimise the risk of ripped ears, pupils with pierced ears should wear only studs.
Necklaces and rings are expressly discouraged.
Watches may be worn at the pupil's own risk. A light waterproof coat should be brought to school as we do take the children out when it is misty or there is light drizzle. Back to top
Ethos and values
Every pupil is special to us and has an important role to play in the school.
We want each child to feel valued and respected and to have the confidence and self esteem to achieve his / her full potential in all aspects of school life.
Whilst we encourage our pupils to achieve ever higher standards, we are well aware that not all pupils will be able to reach academic or sporting heights and try to ensure that every achievement, no matter how small, should be recognised and praised.
We also encourage our pupils to develop strong social skills,
respecting the beliefs, culture, opinions and property of others. We stress the importance of treating each other, adult and child alike, with kindness, respect and politeness.
We teach the children that their activities can have considerable
influence on their environment and that they are custodians of not just our neighbourhood, but also our planet. Back to top
School meals
Our school meals are cooked on the premises and are
reasonably priced.
The week's menus are displayed in school. Vegetarians are carefully catered for.
It is helpful if meals can be paid for either weekly or termly on Mondays. Payment can be by either cash or cheque. Cheques should be made payable to Cornwall County Council.
Free meals may be available to some families and forms are available at school if you wish to apply.

Some children bring packed lunches, but we ask that you do not send glass containers or very hot food for safety reasons.

Children may bring a snack to eat at morning break, but we encourage healthy eating by recommending only plain biscuits or fresh fruit and vegetables. Back to top
Homework
The children will receive homework on a regular basis from the early stages. For the youngest pupils, it will be simply encouragement to read at home, to learn to spell a few words and maths homework with the parent. As pupils get older, the expectations will include research, practise of skills in both literacy and numeracy. Back to top
Sport
We aim to give all pupils the opportunity to experience a wide range of sporting activity both in class time and as extra-curricular clubs. We use the nearby parish hall for gymnastics, dance and drama. There are running tracks, a hard surface play area, teaching room with toilet facilities, a football pitch and a long jump pit on our school field and a netball court on the playground. All full-time pupils swim at the Leisure Centre in Bodmin once a week.
During the year, our extra-curricular sport includes athletics, cross-country running, tag rugby, rounders, quick cricket, country dancing, football, netball and tennis. The clubs are run by staff, parents and friends.
We take part in many sporting competitions, galas and tournaments, against other schools and organisations. Although it is good to win, we encourage every child to regard participation as a personal achievement. We have also achieved the Sport England Activemark Award in recogination of our commitment to promoting the benefits of physical activity and school sport. Back to top
